How to Use Hashtags on Bluesky to Maximize Reach

By DEVBUILDTOOLโ€ข

If you want to grow an audience on decentralized social media, you need to understand Bluesky hashtags tips and how the AT Protocol indexes content. Unlike centralized platforms with black-box algorithms, Bluesky's discovery is largely driven by custom feeds and exact-match facets.

1. How Bluesky Hashtags Actually Work

When you type #photography in a Bluesky post, the AT Protocol parses it and attaches a "rich-text facet" to your post data. This facet explicitly tells the network: "This byte range contains a hashtag with the value 'photography'."

Because of this strict parsing, hashtags on Bluesky must be preceded by a space or newline. If you type word#tag, the parser will not recognize it as a hashtag, and it won't be clickable.

2. Less is More (The 1-3 Rule)

On Instagram, users routinely dump 30 hashtags in a comment. On Bluesky, that strategy will actively hurt you. The community norms and custom feed algorithms heavily favor precision. Sticking to 1-3 highly relevant hashtags is the best practice.

3. Custom Feeds Rule Discovery

This is the most important of all Bluesky hashtags tips: Hashtags power Custom Feeds. Because Bluesky allows developers to build their own algorithms (Feed Generators), many of the most popular feeds are simply queries that pull in posts containing specific hashtags.

For example, if you use #BuildInPublic, your post is automatically syndicated to the popular "Build in Public" feed, putting it in front of thousands of developers who don't follow you. Find the custom feeds for your niche and use the hashtags they monitor.

4. CamelCase for Accessibility

Always capitalize the first letter of each word in a multi-word hashtag (e.g., #WebDevelopment instead of #webdevelopment). Bluesky's search is case-insensitive, so both will be indexed identically, but CamelCase allows screen readers to pronounce the words correctly for visually impaired users.
